Slow Week and Dr. Wicked's Writing Lab

This was one of those weeks! I lost a client, my brother started spring semester so we're driving back and forth and I feel like crap. Are those good enough excuses for not doing my work? Hmmm....Okay, how about my farm animals were abducted by aliens?
Current word count is around 58,500 words. So I managed to add like a couple thousand words. We're slowly inching up there folks. Hopefully we can crack the 60,000 word mark by the end of January! Whoo!

I've found a really great internet program to kind of keep up my efficiency when I do sit down to write at Dr.Wicked's Writing Lab. It's called Write or Die 2.0! Cue the evil laugh...anywho, you just enter your word count goal and the amount of time you want strive to get it finished in. The program opens a new browser window with a text box and a timer. Start writing. You'll get a flashing red background and annoying sounds everytime you take a break that's just a little too long!

Procrastination on a Novel is Sooo Easy...

"Putting off an easy thing makes it hard. Putting off a hard thing makes it impossible."
~George Claude Lorimer

This past week and a half I've managed to cross the 56,000 word mark from where I started around 53,000 words.

Yes, for those of you doing the math I didn't quite keep up with the eensy weensy 400 words a day goal. Ah, how quickly we fall!

Although it feels really good to be back at the novel again. There's a deeply satisfying feeling that comes from putting some words down on paper, or laptop as it were. That book just niggles at the back of my mind until I do something about it, so it's actually a kind of relief when I finally sit down and type on it. Hmmm...despite avoiding my fiction like the plague sometimes.

What is it about writing that we feel we must do and yet we do everything we can think of to avoid it each day? Maybe all writers are sado-masochists.

2009 New Year's Resolutions

Okay, it's that time of year and I've gathered up my New Year's Resolutions for 2009. Many of them have to do with my writing goals, although a couple are more personal. A girl's got to have a life right?

I decided to try and get the rest of the novel rough draft done by April 1st and start editing by June 13th. For those of you actually counting that's 6 weeks, which is the amount of time Stephen King says that he lets his drafts 'rest' before editing. Since I don't have a process of my own for a complete novel yet, I figured I'd borrow from the greats.

The picture is fuzzy, but if you feel like clicking on it the browser should open a larger image that's easier to read.

Hopefully, you've all created your own New Year's Resolutions to use as motivators throughout the year 2009. Feel free me know what your goals are for the year!
